About the Art Collection

The La Trobe University Art collection was founded in 1966 before the first buildings were commenced at Bundoora, the site of La Trobe University’s major campus, some fifteen kilometres north of the Melbourne Central Business District, Victoria.

Dr Roy Simpson, AO, the University's Master Architect, emphasised that art and culture are important aspects of the 'university experience' and the University should lead the way for the wider community. Sculptural works were incorporated in the original design of the buildings, and further commissions and purchases of works of art were made possible with funds raised through the 1976 Retirement Appeal for the inaugural Vice-Chancellor, Dr David Myers.

Today the Art Collection comprises more than two thousand works of art many of which are exhibited on the metropolitan and regional campuses of La Trobe University. Works of art are lent to state and regional public galleries for specific purposes. The Collection is also an important research facility for staff, students and the public.

Cultural Gifts Program
Important contributions to the Art Collection are made through the Federal Government's Cultural Gifts Program of the Taxation Incentives for the Arts Scheme. In this way, La Trobe University is able to acquire valuable works of art that otherwise would not be possible within acquisition funds. Please contact the Art Museum for details.

Artist in Residence Programs
Studios are located on the Bundoora campus where selected artists may practice their craft for residencies of varying duration.
