Digital Images

Digital images are used in the teaching and learning of Art History at La Trobe University. The digital collection of images comprises approximately 15,000 digital files. These digital images are currently being linked through Web CT for student convenience.
All digital images are delivered out of the database application, Madison Digital Image Database, MDID. The MDID software is used in all Art History units and is part of the larger MDID project aiming to deliver all digital images and integrate records of the slide and photographic archives. A growing number of other programs at La Trobe University, for example, History, Theatre and Drama and La Trobe University Art Collection, are also using the MDID image management software.
All staff and students of La Trobe University can directly access digital images in MDID via the link below.
Access is via your La Trobe University Userid. Staff must prefix their Userid with "ltu\".

Slide Collection

The Slide Collection has in excess of 100,000 35 mm slides. The slide collection is an invaluable image archive of Western art ranging from Ancient Egypt to 21st century art, comprising paintings, frescos, mosaics, manuscripts, drawings, prints, sculpture, architecture, decorative arts, costumes, photography and computer art, to name a few. Slides are used in the teaching of Art History both in the lecture theatres and tutorials.
An online catalogue to the collection of slides consists of 40,000 records, only 30% of the entire collection. Its development is on going. Although not a complete catalogue, La Trobe University staff and students will find it useful as a tool for exploring parts of the collection.

Photograph Collection

There are appoximately 5,000 B & W original photographs in the photograph collection. These include architecture, painting, mosaics, drawings, prints from wide range sources.
The collection includes a full record of European paintings in Australia and New Zealand galleries and Museums.
