Art History

From the beginning of 2008 Art History will be administered from within the History Program. Students interested in studying Art History will be able to do so by taking two units at first-year and then selecting units at second and third-year level from the range of subjects offered. These will alternate each year and some will be available on-line. Students will also be able to choose some subjects which are cross-listed with the disciplines of History and Archaeology.

Students who have completed 130-credit points of Art History (or a combination of History and Art History) subjects are eligible to apply for Honours through the History Program. The normal proviso is that a student must have maintained an average mark of B 75 or above. Art History students who are accepted into fourth-year will be required to complete a coursework component of the History general seminar, two special subjects (at least one of which will normally be on Art History), and a 15,000-word thesis. All students wishing to undertake Honours in Art History are encouraged to discuss their interest with the Art History coordinator, Dr Diane Kirkby.

The teaching of Art History at La Trobe University draws on a rich library of over 100,000 slides of paintings, sculptures, prints, photographs, mosaics and buildings. A range of multimedia technologies and new developments in electronic aids for teaching and learning are used in the presentation of the visual material. La Trobe also takes advantage of Melbourne's rich artistic and cultural resources by encouraging visits to museums, galleries and architectural sites whenever possible.
