The teaching of Art History at La Trobe University draws on a rich library of over 100,000 slides of paintings, sculptures, prints, photographs, mosaics and buildings. A range of multimedia technologies and new developments in electronic aids for teaching and learning are used in the presentation of the visual material. La Trobe also takes advantage of Melbourne's rich artistic and cultural resources by encouraging visits to museums, galleries and architectural sites whenever possible.

Undergraduate

Art History is administered from within the History Program. Students interested in studying Art History will be able to do so by taking two subjects at first-year and then selecting subjects at second and third-year level from the range of subjects offered. These will alternate each year and some will be available on-line. Students will also be able to choose some subjects which are cross-listed with the disciplines of History and Archaeology.

Honours
Students who have completed 130-credit points of Art History (or combination of History and Art History) subjects may apply for Honours through the History Program. Students must have maintained an average mark of B 75 or above. Honours will consist of a coursework component, two subjects (at least one on Art History), and a 15,000-word thesis. Students wishing to undertake Honours in Art History can contact the Art History coordinator, Professor Diane Kirkby.

Career Opportunities
There are many possibilities for developing long-term careers with a History major.
