The moment Neil picked up that walking stick to use for the hike I immediately thought of Gandalf from Lord of the Rings. He initially led us on the trail in the beginning before hanging back with me throughout the trek. The journey started out on a flat ground, gradually inclining with rocks and branches occasionally blocking the path. Marked with blue markers the path to the top of Saint Mary’s Peak was challenging and definitely worth the time to climb. Even our unique detour off the path provided us with an interesting perspective of the landscape. The view that you got once you reached the top was like something out of a John Wayne movie. In one of my classes at home I was once told to challenge myself. Not only the climb but also this entire trip has been about challenging myself and I can’t think of a better place to do so than Australia.
