Brief profile

Associate Professor Anthony Lyons works in the areas of Psychology and Public Health. He has held previous appointments at the University of Melbourne as a Research Fellow and at Newcastle University (United Kingdom) as a Lecturer in Psychology.

Anthony takes a leading role in research on the health and wellbeing of marginalised and stigmatised populations. A major focus is mental health, with his work identifying factors and pathways for improving mental health and resilience in marginalised populations such as sexual minorities (LGBT) and people living with HIV. He also conducts research on sexual health in marginalised as well as general populations. His work is multidisciplinary, bringing together Public Health, Social Psychology, Health Psychology, and Positive Psychology. He utilises a diverse range of statistical analysis techniques for answering empirical and theoretical questions. His work has ranged from laboratory-based social psychological experiments to large national and multinational surveys.

Anthony has published 72 journal articles, book chapters, and monographs. His research has been cited more than 1,000 times in the academic literature and has been featured in the media, including The Age, Sydney Morning Herald, Canberra Times, ABC Radio (Radio National, 774 Melbourne, Western Victoria, Newcastle), Triple J, The New York Times, New Zealand Herald, The Huffington Post, and The Conversation.
