Cuong Manh La  - PhD Candidate

Background

What drove me toward sexuality studies with particular interest in men and masculinity initially came from my first experience involved in a UNFPA funded project in 1996 on men’s sexual and reproductive health as a program coordinator.  In 2003, I decided to pursue a Masters degree in human sexuality studies at San Francisco State University, USA to sharpen my academic background on sexuality. The fundamental change in my study about men came when I conducted my Master’s thesis study looking at how female virginity enhances masculinity.  Following up, my research experience was strengthened again when I reintegrated into my old culture after finishing my Master’s degree in 2005.  I had been working at both application and academic levels on men having sex with men, people living with HIV, and teaching medical anthropology for BPH students at the Hanoi School of Public Health. Being at ARCSHS as a Phd candidate is my fortune as it enables me to invest my time and energy to pursue my life eager study interest on masculinity subject for the next over three years.
