Liaison with the communities affected by and working with blood borne viruses and STIs is carried out by a dedicated program, funded by the Victorian Department of Human Services.  The BBV Program at ARCSHS focuses exclusively on education and liaison around BBVs, in particular HIV and hepatitis C, and associated issues.  This program provides education, resourcing and support for Victorian health care workers and service providers in a range of diverse settings, including community health, hospitals and clinical settings, custodial settings, midwifery, youth health and alcohol and other drug agencies.

The BBV Program is coordinated by Jen Johnson, and her responsibilities include the organising and facilitation of a range of opportunities for health workers to update knowledge and expand practice skills.  This includes specialist training programs, seminars and peer-support forums.  Also included in the BBV brief is the conduct, at least three times a year, of the six-day Counsellors' Accreditation Program (CAP), the specialist training course which leads to Department Of Human Services' accreditation as a person competent to provide HIV and Hepatitis C pre- and post-testing counselling.

The BBV Program aims to resource and collaborate with a wide range of services in the health and community sector including:

  • Hepatitis C Organisations
  • HIV Organisations
  • Needle and Syringe Programs
  • Harm Reduction Organisations
  • Primary Health and Alcohol & Other Drug Services
  • Community Health Centres
  • Indigenous Organisations
  • Multicultural Organisations
  • Gay and Lesbian Organisations
  • Health Education Services
  • Hospitals
  • Prisons
