Peter Davies ARC Post doctoral research Fellow (Industry).
Peter's interests are Historical and industrial archaeology and the archaeology of medicine.Peter Davies has more than fifteen years of experience in archaeology, working in the university, government and industry sectors. He has worked extensively on field projects in Turkey, Cyprus, Syria, and around Australia, and since 2004 has lectured in archaeology at La Trobe University. He has played senior roles in major urban archaeological projects, including the Casselden Place Archaeological Investigations, and the Eastlink/Bend Road excavations in Melbourne. His projects at Heritage Victoria resulted in the successful nomination of 28 sites to the Victoria Heritage Register. Davies’ work on Henry’s Mill was one of the first dedicated studies in Australia on the archaeology of the twentieth century. This project used a community studies approach to examine the lives of forest mill workers and their families. Published by Archaeopress in 2006, this cross-disciplinary study was selected to launch the groundbreaking new series ‘Studies in Contemporary and Historical Archaeology’. Davies is also one of Australia’s most prolific scholars on the archaeology of childhood, having published innovative studies on toys, health products and educational materials. He is currently co-authoring a major new synthesis of Australian historical archaeology to be published by Springer.

Penny Crook is Research Associate on the project.
Penny is a historical archaeologist who specialises in urban assemblage analysis and material-culture studies. From 2001 to 2004 she was Project Archaeologist on the ARC Linkage-funded ‘Exploring the Archaeology of the Modern City’ project, conducted by Professor Tim Murray. This project produced 13 volumes of assessment and substantive research on important historical archaeological assemblages from Sydney, including the release of two customised relational databases designed by Crook. She has published on matters of urban archaeology, shopping, assemblage analysis and artefact cataloguing and database design. Her doctoral research (conducted under the supervision of Professor Murray, to be completed in 2008) is principally focussed on consumer studies with respect to material culture and their application to historical archaeological analysis. As part of this study she has conducted an innovative analysis of trade catalogues and pioneered the examination of quality in historical archaeological assemblage analysis. She also provides specialists advice to museums, government agencies and consulting firms in Sydney regarding the significance, research potential and storage of their historical-archaeological collections.
