Careers in Archaeology

"The program at La Trobe University offers a breadth of applied and conceptual learning in identification, assessment and management of cultural resources. Our greatest need is for people with skills and experience in these areas."
Professor Richard Mackay- Managing Director Godden Mackay Logan (Heritage Consultancy)

There are many possibilities for developing long-term, stable, careers, especially in aspects of Australian archaeology and the expanding area of heritage management. Many of our graduates find jobs in this growing field, and our teaching reflects this interest. Core subjects in archaeology may be supplemented with complementary studies in areas as diverse as Aboriginal Studies, Cultural Tourism, Environmental Law, Environmental Management and Business.

Specifically, an Honours degree or postgraduate qualifications in Archaeology or Heritage Management will equip graduates for careers as

government heritage managers
Aboriginal Affairs Victoria and Heritage Victoria are the two primary organisations which administer State legislation providing for the protection of cultural heritage.

private consultants
Many archaeologists work as private consultants within the heritage planning process, employed to identify, assess, and manage archaeological resources.

museum curators
Other graduates find work within museums such as Museum Victoria, the National Museum of Australia or the Museum of Sydney, where they may interpret archaeological evidence to the public, curate collections of archaeological material, or conduct research.

academics
Universities provide opportunities for a relatively small number of graduates. Completion of a PhD or other postgraduate research qualification is essential. University positions generally involve a combination of teaching, research and administration.

A booming demand for archaeologists in Melbourne is creating a hot job market for graduates. Benjamin Preiss reports in Northern Weekly read full article in Northern Weekly (pdf 854kb)

There is currently an under supply of archaeologists - Carolyn Webb reports read full article in The Age.
