About the Department
The Department of Archaeology and History combines two of our strongest areas of research and teaching. Both disciplines achieved ratings of 5 in the 2012 ERA rankings, and the Department ranked 3rd in Australia and 38th internationally in the QS World University Rankings for 2014. The Department also includes the Institute of Latin American Studies, a dynamic focus for teaching and research in the region.
We rank 6th in Australia and in the top 100 internationally for Archaeology subjects, and 7th in Australia and in the top 100 internationally for the fourth year in a row for History subjects (QS World University Rankings by Subject 2016).
We rank as the top university in Victoria and ‘well above world standard’ for Archaeology research, and our research in History & Archaeology and Historical Studies ranks ‘above world standard’ (ERA 2015-2016 assessment).
Our Department is global in its outlook and reach, undertaking teaching and research into issues of fundamental disciplinary import in different geographic areas and time periods.
Our research specialisations cover Indigenous pasts; Australian history from the deep time to the present; people and the environment; European, American and transnational history; and ancient human origins and modern migrations.
