The Indigenous Scholarship

For generations our indigenous Australians have inspired us with their sporting prowess. However this same success has not been replicated consistently across other pursuits. When it comes to higher education, our Indigenous Australians have unacceptably low participation rates when compared to other Australians.

The reasons for this are many and complex, and while there is no easy fix, there are solutions.
In partnership with the State Government of Victoria, the La Trobe University Football Club (LTUFC) is building pathways for young teens to fulfill their educational potential.

This is how it works.

The state government sponsored Koori Academy accepts students between the ages of 15-18 in an effort to achieve better education and employment success. We will offer a select number of Koori Academy students with scholarships to La Trobe University, under the newly created Koori Scholarship.

Given the strong affinity our Indigenous communities have for sport, football has been identified as a key gateway for this initiative and as means of engaging students – many of whom may be daunted by the prospect of university life.

The scholarship includes:
•    support to the value of $6000 per  year for up to four years of study
•    mentoring by select alumni and past players (La Trobe University Football Club)
•    a personal development plan
•    membership to the La Trobe University Sports Centre

'For generations our Indigenous Australians have been well-represented at our most elite level of football, but the same cannot be said of their participation in higher education. We have an opportunity to create a brighter future for Indigenous students and their communities.  With your help we can educate the leaders of tomorrow.'
– Tony Sheehan, Coach Emeritus, La Trobe University Football Club.
