FAQs for Annual Giving


Do students really need additional financial support? Doesn’t the government subsidise their study?
The government supports domestic students by funding Commonwealth supported places at public universities, however over time the level of government support has decreased, shifting the burden increasingly to students.  Accordingly many students, particularly those from low SES or from rural and regional areas, all too frequently miss out on the benefits of a university education. 

Will I receive a receipt?
Yes. All gifts (donations) will receive a receipt for tax purposes. Normally we send them by post within three working days of payment.

I have made a gift using the online payment facility. What happens now?
You will receive an automated confirmation of payment via email. In most circumstances we mail out a receipt for tax purposes within three working days of payment.

Can my gift be claimed in the 2011-2012 financial year?
All gifts (of $2 or more)made before midnight on June 30 2012 can be claimed in this tax year in Australia (regardless of when you receive your receipt).

How will my gift be used and what percentage will go students?
100% of your gift will be allocated to your chosen scholarship fund and will be used to support students in that area. The University will cover all costs associated with the administration of the scholarship funds.

Is your online payment facility secure?
La Trobe University is committed to make your donation secure and private. We use Westpac’s secure online gateway to process all payments.  

Do you keep my credit card details?
Neither La Trobe University or Westpac keep you credit card details beyond the duration of this transaction.

Will you pass on my details to other charitable organisations?
No. Your relationship is exclusively with La Trobe University. Under no circumstances will we pass your details on to other organisations.


I would like to make a gift but would prefer not to use the online donation facility
Should you prefer to pay by cheque, please download, complete and mail the online donation form [PDF 133KB] with your cheque. Please specify the name of scholarship that you wish to contribute to under ‘specific project’ and mail it to the address listed on the form.

Who can I call for assistance?
For assistance and queries please contact the Alumni and Advancement Office during normal business hours, via email  or call 1300 588 300.

Can I make a gift anonymously?
Of course. Be sure to specify this on your donation form or when you make a payment online. This will not affect your ability to claim the gift as a donation for tax purposes.  It will mean however that your gift is not publicly acknowledged at any time by the University.
