Mentor @ La Trobe 2008
The Mentoring at La Trobe (M@LT) program links final year La Trobe University students from a variety of disciplines to workers within a similar field from the University Alumni. The program allows final year students the opportunity to gain insight into preparing for the world of professional work after their time at university.
Following from last year’s successful pilot, the 2008 program has so far attracted over 60 students as well as 50 mentors from local, regional and international professionals from university department heads, staff of the University and well respected industry leaders.
Alumni members from as far a field as the Department of Treasury and Boeing Aircraft in the US, and Hong Kong and India have volunteered their time to support the transition of students preparing for the world of work. Many mentors cited ‘giving back to the University community’ as one of the primary reasons for their involvement. Leading the way as a mentor this year is Professor Paul Johnson, Vice- Chancellor of La Trobe University. Eager to understand the interests and concerns of students, Professor Johnson says, “I believe it will be helpful for students involved, and also beneficial for me as it will give me an opportunity to engage with students.”
The program aims to assist students to network within their field, expand their options and understanding of the workplace, and provide some support and encouragement as they prepare to embark on a career. Mentors are sought over a range of disciplines and industries, including health and social sciences, arts and media, business, law and science, amongst others. Mentors are asked to attend a short induction workshop, meet with their mentee a minimum of five times between April and October and attend a final celebration event at the end of the program.
M@LT aims to provide positive outcomes for all involved across all campuses of the University. If you are interested in volunteering as a mentor for next year’s program, please email Ruth Delagas at alumni@latrobe.edu.au.
