Student Career Mentoring Program
The Student Career Mentoring Program links final year students at the University from a variety of disciplines with workers in a similar field from the University Alumni Community, giving students the opportunity to gain a valuable insight into the world beyond the classroom and preparing them for professional work after they complete their studies. The program aims to assist students to network within their field, expand their options and understanding of the workplace, and provide some support and encouragement as they prepare to embark on their chosen career.
Becoming a mentor for the Student Career Mentoring Program means making a difference in the future prospects of a student. The program enables mentors to develop their leadership, coaching and communication skills while making a positive contribution to a students education. Mentors are sought over a range of disciplines and industries, including Health, Social Sciences, Arts, Media, Business, Law and Science, amongst others.
In previous years the program has been privileged to have mentors from as far a field as the Department of Treasury and Boeing Aircraft in the US, and Hong Kong and India. While leading the local charge were Vice-Chancellor of La Trobe University Professor Paul Johnson, Office of the Vice-Chancellor Executive Director, David Ensor, University R&D Park Director, Sue Bell, and University Media and Communications Manager, Mark Pearce. After the success of 2008, the Student Career Mentoring Program is expanding in 2009 to being available at all University Campuses (Albury-Wodonga, Bendigo, Bundoora, Mildura and Shepparton).
Mentors are required to attend an introductory event in April 2009, meet with their mentee a minimum of five times between April and October, and attend a celebration at the end of the program.

"Being mentored has given me such great ideas and the confidence to follow those ideas through. It is really encouraging to actually have someone interested in what Im doing, and what I am going to do when I graduate.
Stephanie, 2008 Mentee
