Infinity Leadership Program
The 2009 Infinity Leadership Program came to a close on October 15 as the Bendigo and Bundoora students came together to celebrate their journey through the pilot program.
A joint initiative between Student Engagement and Alumni Relations, the Infinity Leadership Program was designed to provide students aspiring to leadership roles with the opportunity to explore theories and develop their own practice in leadership.
The program comprised a Retreat in February which included intensive seminars on leadership cross-cultural communication, conflict resolution and group facilitation. Semester one included seminar series with a range of experienced and inspiring leaders, such as Professor Annabelle Duncan, Executive Director, Science Collaboration at the Biosciences Research Centre who thrilled students with her experience as a UN Biological Weapons Inspector in Iraq before the war. Bernadette McMenamin AO is responsible for the establishment of Child Wise™ Limited which campaigns tirelessly on the issue of child protection and human trafficking. La Trobe University Vice-Chancellor, Professor Paul Johnson was also a program highlight, sharing the challenges and rewards that arise from leading a complex organisation.
Students were given the opportunity to test their own leadership capacity with a Community Project in Semester two. The concepts were creative and innovative, and included a men’s health information seminar delivered at a local footy club (implemented by Bendigo student Athol Han.), development of a campaign to make young travellers aware of child trafficking and what they can do to help on their travels (by Bundoora student Jessica Haywood) and organising a careers networking event with local business leaders for students (Bendigo students Akira-Lyn Kelly and Marissa Hewitt) to name a few.
The students contributed a great deal of energy and ideas to the program, and had a major impact on helping to shape and improve the developing program. The 2010 Infinity Leadership Program will include over sixty students on every campus, which is a great testament to the potential and aspirations of La Trobe University students.
