In recent years he has led the AFL in securing the $780 million television broadcasting deal, which has underpinned the $1.4 billion Next Generation strategy to secure the future of football and expand the game across the country. For three years prior to being appointed CEO in September 2003, he served as General Manager - Football Operations, overseeing all aspects of operating the 16-team AFL competition.

In 1998, Andrew became CEO of the AFL Players Association and was instrumental in establishing programs to look after players during their careers and after their retirement as well as negotiating a landmark 5 year Collective Bargaining Agreement with the AFL as well as a $25 million player fund.

In late 2008 Andrew, the father of three young girls, was appointed by the Federal Government as Chair of the Australian Multicultural Advisory Council.

At a time when relatively few players did tertiary studies, Andrew combined elite sport with a Bachelor of Arts and Diploma of Education at La Trobe University and was well into his 106–game career at North Melbourne and Hawthorn (1981-89) when he started as a teacher of politics and legal studies at Trinity Grammar.

Andrew’s interests include travel, politics, music, the arts and reading.
