La Trobe memories
Do you have any University memorabilia that you’d like to donate or share? We’d welcome hearing from you. Early photographs are especially welcome.
If you also have a story that you think is worth telling, or a reminiscence that is worth sharing, don’t keep it to yourself, tell us! We’ll put the best on the web for the benefit of the La Trobe University community as well as alumni.
La Trobe proudly acknowledges as part of the La Trobe alumni the staff, students and supporters who have made La Trobe what it is today:

Bendigo College of Advanced Education
Bendigo College of Advanced Education (BCAE) resulted from the merger of teacher education with the Bendigo Institute of Technology that took place in 1976. Nurse education also affiliated with the BCAE in 1987, following the termination of hospital based training for general nurses in Victoria. Thus, for the first time all tertiary education in Bendigo was finally under the one umbrella.

Bendigo Institute of Technology
The Bendigo Institute of Technology (BIT) emerged in 1967 from the Bendigo Technical College (previously the School of Mines, until 1959) continuing until 1976 when it too was renamed as result of changes in government policy regarding the provision of tertiary education throughout Australia.

Bendigo School of Mines
The School of Mines commenced in 1873 with the first class being held on 21 April. Bendigo was added to the name in 1883 recognising the adoption of the name for the city, rather than the original, Sandhurst. The now Bendigo School of Mines and Industries (BSM) continued until 1959 on the original site in McCrae St Bendigo.

Bendigo Teachers' College
Bendigo Teachers’ College (BTC) was re-established in 1945 after closure due to the 1930s depression and World War II (1931 – 1945), in temporary accommodation adjacent to Camp Hill Primary School grounds in Rosalind Park in Bendigo. The college re-located to purpose built premises at Osborne St in Flora Hill in 1959.

La Trobe University College of Northern Victoria
La Trobe University College of Northern Victoria (LUCNV) emerged in 1991 following an affiliation between the BCAE and La Trobe University (founded in 1967) when government policies decreed that CAEs were to be abolished and must affiliate formally with a university partner. Three years later, an integration agreement with La Trobe University was approved.
Lincoln Institute of Health Sciences
In 1988, Lincoln Institute reached an agreement to merge with La Trobe University, becoming the tenth school of that university as the Lincoln School of Health Sciences. Shortly after the merger, several Lincoln School departments were relocated to the Bundoora campus of the University. The School continued significant teaching operations on three sites (Bundoora, Carlton and Abbotsford) until additional facilities were completed on the Bundoora campus in 1997.

Northern District School of Nursing
The Northern District School of Nursing (NDSN) housed at Lister House in Rowan St., Bendigo was established in 1950, and was the major regional provider and pioneer of nurse training in Australia until 1987 when nursing education moved from the NDSN to found the Faculty of Health Sciences at the BCAE (the NDSN closed at the end of 1989).

State College Of Victoria
The advent of the State College of Victoria (SCV) occurred in 1973 when the Bendigo Teachers’ College joined the Victorian Institute of Colleges. In 1976 the college was merged with the BIT, as the foundation school of education, to form the Bendigo College of Advanced Education (BCAE). The State College crest the Phoenix Rising is proudly displayed, to this day, in the foyer of the Education Faculty building at Bendigo.
Wodonga Institute of Tertiary Education
The Wodonga Institute of Tertiary Education amalgamated with La Trobe University from January 1991.
