Back to Back Premierships!
After last year's journey being served up on a plate, 2010 proved to be more difficult. Many players battling injury which resulted in some inconsistent performances and a new significant rivalry formed with St Johns La Trobe's quest for back to back premierships looked in doubt at 3 quarter time being 24pts down. But some inspiring football across the board, a Leo Barry mark and a match saving smother highlighted the greatest comeback in La Trobe University Football Clubs History to see La Trobe walk away with a 1 point Grand Final Victory.

A few special mentions to Geremie Ganino to win the Best & Fairest from the forward pocket/midfield and kicking 58 goals and Stuart Patten winning the goal kicking whilst missing 10 games through injury.

La Trobe University Football Club would also like to recognise the efforts of Dean and Terry and congratulate them on their performance over the last four seasons and wishes them the best with their home lives moving forward. The club also wishes to recognise the efforts of Steven Adamthwaite. His efforts over a 13 year period have been instrumental in the clubs success.

La Trobe University Mountaineering Club

2010 has been a busy year for LUMC members, with adventures happening almost every week. We kicked off the year with the annual Big Weekend. About 60 LUMCers camped up at the Cathedral Ranges and took part in activities including white-water kayaking, rock climbing, bush walking and mountain biking.

Other highlights included:

  • Easter rock climbing at Mt Arapiles , and spring climbing in the Blue Mountains
  • XC skiing at Lake Mountain, Mt St Gwinear, and an epic Crosscut Saw trip
  • Kayaking the Yarra in flood, and the annual Mitchell river inter-club kayaking / rafting trip, run between LUMC, MUMC and MBOC
  • Overnight bushwalks and hikes at Falls Creek, and in June walking from Johanna Beach to Cape Otway
  • LUMC’s annual Faux Pas (thermal) Ball

Club members have also been walking in Tasmania, skiing in New Zealand and mountain biking in East Timor, allowing those of us who couldn’t get time off various commitments to live vicariously through our friends.

A big thanks goes out to the 2009/10 committee for all their hard work, and for passing on much needed knowledge and skills. Anyone interested in getting outdoors in 2011 should visit www.lumc.org.au

While here Mick and Nicholas caught up with some of La Trobe’s greats, Tony Sheehan, Russell Badham, Glenys (Hahn) Sheldrick and Rex Hardman to watch the La Trobe win comfortably over Kew in the first game of the 2010 season.

Racketlon in Melbourne

The La Trobe University Autumn 2010 Racketlon was held on Sunday, March 14. The event was the University's first ever racketlon and was organised by the La Trobe Squash club. It was hosted by the La Trobe Sports Centre, in Bundoora (Melbourne). Most of the 17 entrants were students from La Trobe University or Monash University who had never even heard of racketlon until a few weeks before the event. However, the tournament also attracted two Scottish expatriates, Calum and Niall Munro, both of whom had played competitive racketlon throughout Europe.

All 17 players were placed in the main draw, with the first, second and third round losers competing for the C, B and A grade titles respectively. Sets were played to 15 points, with a margin of two points required if scores reached 14/14. There were tight matches being played all day. Anton Jurkiw and Jee Wee Ong’s first round match finished as a tie on 52/52, with Jee Wee triumphant in the Gummiarm Tiebreak. In round two, Anurag Gill defeated Jee Wee Ong 26/24 in the tennis set, with the total scores being 57/54.

At lunch time, players were treated to sausages, rissoles, salads and coleslaw, which was provided at no extra charge to competitors. Most players showed a great deal of talent in their strongest sport and were able to adapt some of their skills to the other sports. However, the consistency of the Scottish men over all four sports proved to be too much for the locals to handle, setting up an intriguing father/son battle in the final. In the final, Calum took an early lead before Niall managed a massive comeback from 14/10 down to eventually take the table tennis set 18/16. Badminton, being both Calum and Niall's strongest sport, was always going to be hotly contested. Niall was victorious, 15/12, which gave the youngster a five-point lead. Calum, the former world number 14, refused to give in and won the squash 15/12, which reduced the margin to two points with the tennis set to play. The tennis was another close set with solid stroke play from both ends of the court. Calum managed to win the set 15/11. The aggregate over all four sports was 58/56, which means that Calum Munro became the first La Trobe University Racketlon champion. Players had a fun day and there was a strong indication that most players will spread the word amongst their friends and sporting clubs, before returning for the next racketlon event.

La Trobe University will host the Winter 2010 Racketlon on Saturday, August 7.

La Trobe University Mountaineering Club (LUMC)

As a La Trobe alumnus, the La Trobe University Mountaineering Club (LUMC) has given me the opportunity to express my love of the outdoors both during and since my time studying at La Trobe University.  LUMC is a club that does more than just scaling alpine peaks. It is a club devoted to the enjoyment of the outdoors based on an appreciation of the natural environment, and is motivated by the desire for exploration, adventure and the "wilderness experience". The club is run by its members for the La Trobe community and places considerable emphasis on sharing knowledge and skills.

I first came across the club when I was a Student Host volunteer in 2008. I was drawn to the club by the range of exciting activities the club offers. Since that time, I have taken up new sports and have been involved in regular rock climbing, mountain biking and bushwalking trips, exploring much of Victoria. In the coming winter, I will test out my skills at the snow. Not only have I had fun on these trips but have also made some long-lasting friendships with people from all across the globe, which can certainly be a challenge at university.  Activities LUMC participates in include bushwalking, caving, mountain-biking, rock-climbing, kayaking and cross country skiing.

LUMC continues to be active in Semester 1 2010. We are preparing for some exciting activities and trips including our regular Indoor kayaking, BBQs, “The Big Weekend”- the clubs annual introductory trip. Additionally we have planned to go caving and mountain biking.

So join us, come along to many of our trips and have fun, learn something new, challenge yourself and make friends along the way!

La Trobe University Bags 13 medals at the Australian University Games

“A record of 7003 students from 44 different universities have participated in the 2009 Australian University Games (AUG), which successfully concluded last Friday with participants saying it has been the best Games ever” - CEO of Australian University Sport (AUS), Mr Don Knapp.

La Trobe again fielded a strong team of students who participated in what is now the premier University sporting event in Australia – the Australian University Games, which was held on the Gold Coast from 28 September to 2 October.

La Trobe students from campuses all around Victoria were invited and selected to represent the University in 14 different sports and competing against 43 Universities from around Australia. Despite the enormous cost to get to the Gold Coats, 194 students managed to make the trip.

In 2008, the Games were held in Melbourne and La Trobe, with a team of 270 students, managed to bring home 10 medals, the best performance ever by a La Trobe team at the Games.

However, despite a smaller team participating in the Games this year due to the enormous cost, we managed to win 13 medals, 3 better than 2008 and equal number selection in Green and Gold (All Australian Representative team) from the previous year.

This is an outstanding sporting achievement and a clear indication that students from La Trobe have the talent and the enthusiasm to ‘take on’ the ‘sandstone’ universities from around Australia.

Great Year for the La Trobe Uni Hockey Club in 2009

La Trobe University Hockey Club had a great season in 2009, with a heap of new players, great social events and success on the field.

"It was fantastic to see so many new faces at the club this year and to have such popular social functions" said Social Co-ordinator Morgan Jenkins.

The club fielded competitive teams in both the Men’s and Women’s competitions. This season saw Women’s teams in State League 3, Metro 1 and Metro 3, and Men's teams in State League 5, Metro 2 North and Metro 2 West.

The Women's teams did very well, with the Women's State League 3 side only just missing the finals and the Women's seconds making the finals only to lose in a cliff hanger. Women's hockey at the club has never been so strong and with many new students, including new international students, the teams are in great shape.

As well as having great success on the field in 2009 with the women, the Men had a stellar come back year. The Men's State League 5 team won the Grand Final, whilst the Men's 2's and 3's only just missed out on their Grand Finals.

The club continues to be a great place for La Trobe students to come along and make life-long friendships.

This year has also seen the hockey club take significant steps towards returning to hockey fields on campus at La Trobe Bundoora, and with a robust business case about to come off the printers we hope that it will not be to long before Women’s and Men's hockey teams can once again be playing on the grounds of the University.

The club has also entered a Mixed team and a Women’s team in Summer Hockey for this year. Summer Hockey caters for all level of hockey skill from the beginner to the more experienced and it is a great way to keep a bit of fitness and have some fun over summer. La Trobe Cheerleading Club

The La Trobe University Dancesports Club was founded in early 2009 by James Gibbons and Simone McSweeney. The Club's first semester saw the development of a competitive cheerleading squad, comprising 17 members. This squad competed at the AASCF Showdown Internationals Competition and received first place for their routine.

On top of their dedication to training, the squad members have shown a great amount of enthusiasm to participate in promotional and fundraising events, which has been great to see.

Semester two has seen the addition of several new members and a dance class to enable choreographed sideline routines for the La Trobe Basketball Club and other various promotional events.

La Trobe Aikido Club

Aikido stands for "the Way of unifying (with) life energy". Aikido teaches one to blend with the motion of the attacker and redirect the force of the attack without opposing the attack head-on. This reflects the philosophy of the founder of Aikido, Ueshiba Morihei, of self-preservation without the need of excessive violence.

Established in 1965 under direct authorisation of Ueshiba Morihei (or O'Sensei - Great Teacher - as he is commonly known), Aiki Kai today has many branches worldwide. The La Trobe University Aikido Club (LTUAC) is one of the centres that carry on the traditions and teachings laid out by O'Sensei. Aiki Kai gradings are internationally recognised throughout the Aiki Kai organisation worldwide.

Sessions at the LTUAC are held twice a week (Mondays and Wednesdays at 5:30-6:30pm) at the Squash Court 1 in the Sports and Recreation Centre (SARA), Latrobe University. They are conducted by Leon Metzeling Sensei. First lesson is free.

La Trobe Women's Football Team - a day at the 'G'

Over the Queen’s Birthday break, the La Trobe University Women's Football Team were invited to take part in a lap of honor around the MCG during the Melbourne v Collingwood clash at the MCG.

Although the weather was miserable their day was brightened after the team took a wrong turn and walked straight into the player’s change rooms.

Chris Connolly gave the La Trobe girls some encouraging words about women’s footy, before they got out on to the 'G', waving to the crowd. One of the highlights for many of the girls was the opportunity to watch themselves on the big screen.
