Mildura’s YAG Inauguration evening of 11 September 2009
Mildura’s La Trobe University Alumni Relations held the Young Alumni Group (YAG) inauguration evening at La Trobe’s city Campus. Attendees constituted students, academic and non academic staff, representatives from SIFE and other supporting individuals. More than 25 people attended the inaugural Mildura YAG event enjoying the opportunity to meet with classmates, fellow students from other ‘schools’ and teaching staff and also to make new contacts in the pleasant surrounds of the campus’ court yard.
Mr John Kotroulas, Chair and President of La Trobe University Alumni Relations - Mildura Campus, spoke of the University's desire to collate, keep and maintain students’ interests and the need to transform said interests into desired activities by forming meaningful and purpose-oriented Clubs or Groups with the intention of being actively involved and participating in academic and social networking opportunities. Mr Kotroulas also spoke of the need for the probable enduring links and meaningful academic and social relationships that can be maintained with fellow YAG members, graduates and staff; for example, SIFE.
Mr Kotroulas further actively encouraged the growth of the Alumni network. Being keen to develop Mildura’s Alumni Chapter to the next level, John informed participants of the need to involve YAG members and La Trobe University graduates, who reside and/or work in the region, to keep close links with the local Alumni office situated at the city’s campus (29 Deakin Avenue). Mr Kotroulas encouraged students to sign up as YAG members (no costs involved), yet plenty of activities to be done. Talking about activities, participants were engaged in crossword puzzles. Those individuals who completed the tasks first were awarded cinema tickets. We also played other games. The theme of the evening was WHACKIEST PAIR OF SHOES. Many thanks to those who went out of their way to purchase whacky shoes, the individual who gave his shoes to a dressmaker and really wore whacky shoes and those who wore other shoes and thongs. The wacky evening was on!
John thanked all staff who participated and represented their faculties/schools, students and all those individuals who tirelessly worked ‘behind the scenes’ to make the event a success (Gail Ahearn, Simon Gibson, Jeremy Seward, Dr. Petrus Usmanij, Mr Kent Farrell - Director, Mildura campus and other quintessential individuals). Mostly, his thanks were directed to the Alumni Relations Office – Bundoora, for providing 13 tickets to the cinema, paying for the dinner that followed to Pizza Café and Kent Farrell- Director of Mildura campus, for donating consumables for the BBQ.
Following Mr. Kotroulas’ cooking (BBQ), he further thanked the Mildura Alumni Committee members for their support. John vigorously encourages any interested graduates to come along to future events and contact the campus office on 5051 4000 or Mildura@latrobe.edu.au, or John direct on 03 5051 4031 or jkotroulas@latrobe.edu.au for an Alumni information page and YAG application form.
