Art History Chapter News and Events

December 2011

December.  Our events for this year have finished.  We have enjoyed a very successful year.

It has been our most successful in a number of ways.  Our membership is over 80 – we have attracted a number of new members this year.  We are on Facebook and a number of younger members have taken advantage of this avenue of contact.

Our committee has been very active – this year we have arranged 15 events, talks and exhibitions on a variety of Art History subjects.  We have included interstate and Victorian regional visits as well as local ones. We have participated in the History Faculty post graduate lectures. Our key event, the Rae Alexander Lecture, held at the National Gallery of Victoria was particularly successful.  We have joined with numerous other events run by the University and other like - minded organisations such as the La Trobe University Museum of Art, Melbourne Art Network and St. Mary’s Newman College.

Our raison d’être is to support Art History. We continue to sponsor two student prizes which are presented annually. Our winners, this year, were Darryl Ephraums (first year prize) and Esther Theiler (third year prize).  The study of Art History is also enhanced over the next two years at La Trobe University by an additional summer school intensive Renaissance Art: Rivalry Power and Passion in the World of Leonardo in February 2012 and, in 2013, the Master of Arts in Applied Cultural Heritage will be offered.

Thank you all for supporting us this year and particular thanks go to the committee of the Art History Alumni for their hard work and enthusiasm.  We welcome new members. Please contact the Alumni and Advancement Office at the address below.

Our first event next year will be a trip to Canberra for Renaissance: Raphael.Botticelli.Titian.Bellini 15th and 16th Century Italian Painting from the Accademia Carrara, Bergamo. This is being arranged for February 6th, 2012. It will include a curator’s talk and lunch afterward.
