It is an opportunity to, not only keep up with, but contribute to, the exciting new developments that are occurring as the University, and its Alumni, continues to grow.
Art History is the study of art in its historical and cultural context. This study helps us to appreciate art, architecture and the artist against the background of the history, politics, religion and literature of the time. When a work of art is placed within its social and cultural framework we gain an insight into the broader development of concepts and ideas in the history of human societies.
School of Historical and European Studies -
Art History Program
The Art History Program was established to teach, and to conduct research in, the history of Western art. It has become well-known for its enthusiastic teaching and international scholarship. In contemporary society visual forms of communication play a major role in our daily experience. Art history is concerned with this experience through the visual analysis of art and architecture in historical and contemporary cultures and through the study of the language of images.
