Australian Institute for Primary Care & Ageing

Postgraduate Research

The Australian Institute for Primary Care & Ageing is a dedicated research and consultancy unit within the Health Research Division of the Faculty of Health Sciences. The goal of AIPCA is to make a significant, positive and enduring impact on the quality, efficiency and equity of health and community care services in Australia. Applied research programs are conducted through the specialist units of the Institute:
  • Australian Centre for Evidence Based Aged Care
  • Centre for Health Communication and Participation (incorporating the Cochrane Consumers and Communication Review Group)
  • Centre for Health Systems Development
  • e-Health Unit
  • John Richards Initiative
  • Lincoln Centre for Research on Ageing

The Quality Improvement Council is an associate of and collaborates with the AIPCA on a range of projects.

Institute staff can provide research degree supervision in areas such as:

  • Ageing and aged care (community, acute and residential term aged care services, dementia services, issues affecting carers, pain, retirement and other life transitions, survivors of genocide or mass trauma)
  • Consumer participation in health care, policy and systems
  • Health program evaluation
  • Understanding the impact and driving the agenda of health policy development and system reform
  • The impact of e-health on consumers, services and systems
  • Workforce issues, particuarly in an ageing society.

Unique opportunities exist to work alongside skilled applied researchers, in consultation with policy-makers and service providers, with the shared goal of adding to the evidence base about and improving the design of health care systems in Victoria and across Australia. Part-time employment as a research assistant or junior project worker while undertaking study may be available in some areas.
