In the past two decades, there have been
many advances in HIV prevention. Several countries have
demonstrated effective initiatives in preventing the
spread of the virus. There are, however, many gaps in
our efforts to prevent the spread of HIV. We need to
improve access to effective prevention strategies as
well as develop new methods of stopping transmission.
This theme discussed the possibilities of enabling environments,
looked at the most recent developments in vaccines,
explored harm reduction aimed at reducing the spread
of HIV in injecting drug users and looked at the prevention
of transmission between mother and child, among specific
vulnerable and marginalised groups, men, women and young
people and the access to HIV/AIDS information and education.
