Introduction
Developing countries struggle with agricultural, political, economic and social constraints in trying to alleviate poverty and participate in the global economy, and achieve sustainability.
This course provides graduates with an understanding of the scientific processes involved in agricultural management and practice, and of the political and social requirements for international development.
Course description
First year studies include:
- Agricultural systems
- Culture and Globalisation - Introduction to Anthropology
- Biology
- Basic Chemistry
- Globalisation - The rise of the modern world.
Later year studies include a research project, case studies, and opportunities for an international study experience.

Employment prospects
Graduates who are aware of the human dimensions of development, and are skilled in the principles of agricultural science, are versatile and well equipped for employment in the development assistance field. Graduates may become members of the Australian Institute of Agricultural Science and Technology.
Pre-requisites
Units 3 & 4 a minimum study score of 25 in English (any).
Recommended VCE subjects: Agriculture and Horticulture, Biology, Chemistry, Mathematical Methods, Specialist Mathematics.

Industry experience
An essential requirement of the degree is twelve (12) weeks of approved industry experience, taken during the vacation periods. Each work experience period of 3 weeks must be carried out on a different enterprise and is written up in a work experience report.
Honours
An Honours degree in International Development / Development Studies is available to suitably qualified students and will require an additional year of full-time study.
