About the Department

Since its creation in 1966, La Trobe's Department of Agricultural Sciences has been dedicated to providing a broad education, equipping students with the necessary skills to solve the problems facing agricultural, environmental and resource industries.

With increasing pressure on these sectors in the 21st century, the Department continues to produce graduates who are ready to take up a diverse range of job opportunities, from working with local environmental protection agencies to improving farming practices in developing countries.

The Department's research focuses on some of today's biggest environmental challenges, such as sustainable food production, disease threats, and soil productivity. As the global population increases, addressing challenges such as these will only become more important.

The Department's staff and students work and study in AgriBio, the Centre for AgriBioscience – a state-of-the-art facility for agricultural research that accommodates up to 400 researchers from La Trobe and the Victorian Department of Primary Industries.
