Census Dates for Units of Study 2009

The University is required to nominate a Unit Census Date (UCD) for each Unit of Study it proposes to offer in a particular year. Units of Study are offered in teaching periods (eg Semester One) and all Units of Study in a teaching period have the same unit census date. Possible teaching periods for 2009 and their corresponding census dates are outlined below.

Teaching periods have been categorised into Standard, Research, Third Party Provider and Non-Standard. The majority of the Units of Study offered by the University are offered within the Standard Teaching Periods. All teaching periods are designated by the weeks in which they are offered, for example Semester 1 is W10-W23.

In defining these teaching periods, week 1 is from 1 January to the first Sunday of the year. In 2009, week 1 is Monday 29 December 2008 to Sunday 4 January 2009. Week 2 is the first week of 2009 that commences on a Monday and ends on a Sunday. In 2009, week 2 will be Monday 5 January 2009 to Sunday 11 January 2009. A calendar showing weeks and dates for 2009 is provided for your assistance.

A student incurs a fee for all units on their enrolment after census day has passed, e.g. for Sem 1, 2009, the census date is Thursday 2 April. This is the last day on which a student may withdraw from a unit without financial penalty. Any unit in which a student is enrolled on Friday 3 April will be included in their fee assessment.

Examples: How to identify the dates for a specific Teaching Period and Unit Census Dates

Example 1: The Non-Standard teaching period W02-08 involves weeks 2 to 8 of the year, where the teaching period commences in week 2 [Monday 5 January to the Sunday 11 January] and ends in week 8 [Monday 16 February to the Sunday 22 February]. The Unit Census Date for all Units of Study offered in that teaching period is Friday 16 January.

Example 2: The Standard All Year teaching period W10-44 involves weeks 10 to 44 of the year, where the teaching period commences in week 10 [Monday 2 March] and ends in week 44 [Sunday 1 November]. The Unit Census Date for all Units of Study offered in that teaching period is Thursday 21 May.

Current Teaching Periods and their Census dates and Dates for System-generated K and KN Grades

K Grade

If a student withdraws from a unit after one third of the teaching period has passed, they will have a K grade recorded against that unit. 'K' signifies that a student has withdrawn without failing the unit.

Note that, if census day for that unit occurs before one third of the teaching period has passed, the 'K' grade will be recorded if a student withdraws after census day.

KN Grade

If a student withdraws from a unit after two thirds of the teaching period has passed, they will have a KN grade recorded against that unit. 'KN' signifies that a student has withdrawn from and failed the unit.

In the table and calculator below:

•  census date is the last day to withdraw before a student incurs a financial penalty

•  K date is the first day on which a K grade will be recorded.

•  KN date is the first day on which a KN will be recorded

For example . For a unit which is offered in Semester 1.

From the table:

Teaching period Start Date Census K grade KN grade End date
SEM-1 02/03/2009 02/04/2009 03/04/2009 05/05/2009 06/06/2009

Census day is 02 April 2009. This is the last day on which a student may withdraw without financial penalty

K grade. A student must withdraw before 03 April 2009 to avoid having a K grade recorded against that unit.

KN grade. A student must withdraw before 05 May 2009 to avoid having a KN grade recorded against that unit.
