9. Encumbrance messages
An encumbrance is a 'penalty' applied to a student record. There are two types of encumbrances - Academic encumbrance and Administrative encumbrance.
Academic encumbrances, for example, are generally applied when a student has not satisfied course progression requirements, or has been found guilty of academic misconduct, or has been excluded from a course, or has been excluded by a faculty.
Administrative encumbrances, for example, are applied when a student has not provided required administrative documentation, or has outstanding monies owing to the University, or has been terminated.
The penalty imposed will depend on the nature of the encumbrance. For example, penalties can range from the removal of access to email, library or other services, inability to re-enrol, inability to graduate, or inability to obtain an academic transcript.
