Amorial Bearings

The La Trobe University armorial bearings were designed to include national and state emblems, images of scholarship and refrences to the La Trobe family, after whom the University was named. Australia is represented by the Wedgetailed Eagle and Victoria by the sprigs of heath, the State’s floral emblem. The open book symbolises learning and the scallop shells, which symbolise pilgrimages, are a reference to the armorial bearings of the La Trobe family. The French motto ‘Qui cherche trouve’ (Whoever seeks shall find) is a modern version of the La Trobe family motto.
