Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President (Academic)

Professor Jane LongProfessor Jane Long commenced at La Trobe University in December 2012 and is currently Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President (Academic).  Prior to her current appointment she was Pro Vice-Chancellor (Education) and Winthrop Professor of History at the University of Western Australia, where she also held positions as Director of the Centre for Women’s Studies and Dean of Undergraduate Studies. At UWA, Jane was responsible for leading strategy and planning for learning and teaching including e-learning and regional initiatives.  She received a national ALTC Citation for Outstanding Contribution to Learning and Teaching in 2005, was a finalist for a National Teaching Award in 2006, and led a team which won an ALTC national Programs Award in relation to postgraduate education in 2008.

At La Trobe, Jane is working with the senior executive to lead the implementation of the University’s strategic plan – Future Ready. Her portfolio includes Future Learning, Access and Achievement Research, the Curriculum Teaching and Learning Centre, Equity and Diversity, Student Enrichment and Quality. She is also responsible for academic staffing matters.  She has a particular interest in the student experience and in the development of cultural competencies, including meaningful engagement with Indigenous values and knowledges.  She is a TEQSA accredited national auditor and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society in the UK in 1999. Her own research and publications are in two main fields:  late nineteenth century British and European politics, gender relations, and poverty; and the social, political and cultural impact of cyber-technologies and social media in contemporary life (with a particular emphasis on discourses of gender).  She also writes about online learning, and is currently contributing to a range of national learning and teaching projects relating to teaching standards, student participation in curriculum reform, and assessment benchmarking.
