Aboriginal Studies

Undergraduate Studies

Aboriginal Studies is an interdisciplinary program. Selected subjects from a number of disciplines, mainly (but not exclusively) in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, can be taken for the purposes of satisfying the requirements of the Bachelor of Arts (ABA) degree.

Units offered in Aboriginal Studies reflect the broad range of interests in Australian Indigenous and related issues held by staff at the University. Units are divided into core subjects, which have exclusive or high level focus on Indigenous issues, and other subjects, which may be relevant to Aboriginal Studies for a number of other reasons.

Because Aboriginal Studies has a substantive rather than disciplinary focus, students should consider the advantages of taking a double major combining Aboriginal Studies with a recognised discipline, such as Anthropology, Archaeology, History, Legal Studies or Politics.

A major in Aboriginal Studies consists of 130 credit points of designated Aboriginal Studies subjects, including at least 30 credit points at first-year level and at least 60 credit points at third-year level. At least 60 credit points must be accrued from the designated core units. These 60 credit points can be accrued from units taken at any level (first-year, second-year or third-year).
