Research

Researchers at La Trobe University are involved in a wide variety of projects concerning Indigenous Australia. The following represents just some of the recent research output in Aboriginal Studies by La Trobe staff.

Anthropology
John Morton has recently jointly edited (with Philip Batty and Lindy Allen) The Photographs of Baldwin Spencer, Miegunyah, Melbourne, 2005. Between 2002 and 2005 Dr Morton has also submitted, through New South Wales Native Title Services, three reports to the Federal Court of Australia to support the Bandjalang People # 1 NC96/16 (NG6034/98) Native Title Determination Application.

Archaeology
La Trobe’s archaeologists are currently involved in a number of important Indigenous projects, including ‘Aboriginal Archaeology of Western Victoria’ (David Frankel) and ‘The Southern Forests Archaeological Project’ in Tasmania (Richard Cosgrove, Nicola Stern). Simon Holdaway and Nicola Stern recently published A Record in Stone: The Study of Australia's Flaked Stone Artefacts, Aboriginal Studies Press, Canberra and Museum Victoria, Melbourne, 2004.

History
Richard Broome has recently published two major books, one with colleague Corinne Manning – Broome, R. Aboriginal Victorians: A History Since 1800, Allen & Unwin, Sydney, 2005; Broome, R. and Manning, C., 'A Man of All Tribes': The Life of Alick Jackomos, Aboriginal Studies Press, Canberra, 2006.

Linguistics
Barry Blake continues to undertake extensive research on Victorian Aboriginal languages and is currently working on a project titled ‘Reconstructing the Kulin Language of Victoria’. Professor Blake has recently published three books on Victorian Aboriginal languages: The Dhudhuroa Language of North-eastern Victoria: a Description Based on Historical Sources in Aboriginal History, Aboriginal History Inc., Canberra, 2002; The Warrnambool Language, Pacific Linguistics, Canberra, 2003; The Bunganditj (Buwandik) language of the Mount Gambier region, Pacific Linguistics, Canberra, 2003

Politics
Robert Manne has recently published two important contributions to public debate about key Indigenous issues: R. Manne, In Denial: The Stolen Generations and the Right, BlackInc, Melbourne, 2001; and R. Manne (ed.), Whitewash: On the Fabrication of Aboriginal History, BlackInc, Melbourne, 2003.
