Modern humans in Asia, Australia and Oceania: timing, impact, signatures and spread

When:

Friday 8th – Sunday 10th December 2006
Registration from the afternoon of the 7th

Venue:

La Trobe University, Beechworth Campus

This year’s conference will explore a wide range of issues relating to the settlement of Asia, Australasia and the Pacific by populations of modern humans. It is designed to broaden ongoing discussion about the dispersal of modern humans and the origins of behavioural modernity by enrolling the archaeological record of our own region into those debates. Topics for discussion include the timing and palaeoenvironmental context of initial settlement, dispersal through the region, human impacts on the region and the idea that the modern behavioural repertoire has a single, diagnostic signature.

Keynote address:
Professor Jim O’Connell, Department of Anthropology, University of Utah.
