Professor Edgar Smith Scholarship
The Department of Mathematics and Statistics has established a memorial scholarship to honour the life and work of Professor Edgar Smith who was a renowned academic with the University for twenty years. Professor Smith was appointed to the Chair of Applied Mathematics in 1986 and during his career with La Trobe he served as Head of the Department as well as the Dean of the Faculty of Science, Technology and Engineering. He was also Pro Vice-Chancellor IT from 1995-2005. He passed away in July 2009.
The Professor Edgar Smith Scholarship takes the form of a Travel Award, to be awarded annually to a full-time PhD student of outstanding merit from the Department. The Travel Award is to allow the recipient to undertake an extended overseas visit, to attend a conference and to work with an expert of international standing in the area of the student's thesis. The Award will normally be made in the area of applied mathematics (including mathematical physics), which was Professor Edgar Smith's own discipline area.
Please contact the La Trobe University Foundation for more information regarding these scholarships.
Richard Zann Memorial Bursary
In February 2009, the Victorian bushfires claimed the lives of Dr Richard Zann, his wife Eileen and their daughter Eva. Dr Zann was a highly respected staff member of La Trobe University. He was a distinguished teacher and ornithologist and he had an international reputation for his work on bird behaviors. Dr Zann had been a member of the Department of Zoology at La Trobe University since 1972.
In memory of Richard Zann, and to acknowledge the significant impact of both his research and teaching, an annual bursary has been established by his family, donors, and the Department of Zoology, that will support the career development of a La Trobe University research student from a rural area.
The University would like particularly to acknowledge Christopher Zann, the surviving member of the immediate family for his pledge to this bursary, and the wider Zann family who have also committed their support.
The Zoology Department and members of Dr Zann's family would like to see the fund grow to enable the bursary to be offered into the distant future to honour Richard Zann.

Applications for these awards must be made through the University’s Equality and Diversity Centre. For more information and details of the eligibility criteria, students are advised to contact the centre.
